After some web researches (thanks google), i successfully installed PHP with GD.

I am starting from an installation with apache and PHP working: to get this point, read this

Here are the things i did :

If you have already enabled PHP, disable it in apache config: open the file /etc/apache2/httpd.conf, put a comment before "LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so":
#LoadModule php5_module local/php5/libphp5.so

Get the PHP 5.2.5 Release 6 BETA (You can eventually get the future new versions in Marc's forum):

curl -O http://www2.entropy.ch/download/php5-5.2.5-6-beta.tar.gz
tar -xzf php5-*-beta.tar.gz

If you have already installed the classic Marc Lyanage package, move it to your desktop:

sudo mv /usr/local/php5 ~/Desktop/php5.old

Put in the new package in place:

sudo mv php5 /usr/local/

Add a link to tell apache to use this version:
sudo ln -sf /usr/local/php5/entropy-php.conf /etc/apache2/other/+entropy-php.conf

Configure is the file php.ini. You will find the file inside the new package. Edit /usr/local/php5/lib/php.ini. To contact the database MySQL with PHP you have to set the default socket name for local MySQL connects. Find the line starting with "
mysql.default_socket =
", modify it to : "
mysql.default_socket = /var/mysql/mysql.sock
", save the file.

Restart apache:
sudo apachectl restart

PHP should now be up and running. You can test it by dropping a file named test.php into your apache root folder directory (/Library/Webserver/Documents/). Into that file, write this line:
<?php phpinfo() ?>
.
Now open up http://localhost/test.php in your web browser.
You should see a status table with information about the PHP module.

In case you just want the classic Marc Lyanage PHP version with no GD, do this:

make a link to help installation process :
sudo ln -s /etc/apache2 /etc/httpd

(if not you will get an error like "The following install step failed: run postflight script for Entropy PHP. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance")

get entropy PHP package at http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/

Install the entropy package (double-click on "entropy-php.mpkg")

1GB RAm
Booting to CD-ROM/HD/Floppy

Please, can someone help me. I have tried 2 other distros, SUSE and FC5. SUSE wont install because it says it is missing the software, and FC5 installs without errors but won't run from the virtual HD.
grrr, why does life hate me?

Solution :

I had the same problem on my MacBook Pro with 2 gigabytes of RAM.

There seems to be an issue concerning Ubuntu and/or parallels and how much RAM you give to the Ubuntu virtual machine. It looks like this problem may not effect everyone, but most people reporting installation problems with ubuntu over parallels seem to experience it.

Reducing the RAM allocated to the Ubuntu virtual machine to 512MB should fix the problem. If that doesn't work, try 256MB. I'm not sure why this problem exists, but it does seem to be a common issue, and hopefully parallels will have a solution out soon. Anyway, reducing the allocated RAM should get you past the Hardware detection and allow you to install.

I installed off a mounted (not burned) i386-desktop-live cd. When running the VM at 1024M or above, I'd get the stall at hardware detection, plus the power message on the live desktop, and the installer would hang at 15%. Reducing the RAM fixed everything.

Once installed, I tried boosting the RAM back up to 1024M, but got the same hardware detection stall, and the os wouldn't boot. Once or twice, I've had success with 1000M, but most times it would stall or would boot w/o a working network connection (no idea why...) Fortunately, 512M always works for me. Again, I'm not sure why this is, and hopefully Parallels will have a patch out soon that fixes this and any other problems with Ubuntu, but until then reduce the ram and hopefully things will light up.

Merci Google !

How To Disable Apple's "Dashboard Advisor"

Topic: Corporate Spyware

Oh, Apple.

How could you? With the recently released maintence update Mac OS 10.4.7, the company has added a background daemon that reports information about your computer to Apple once every eight hours.

Called the Widget Advisory, the invisible program checks which widgets you have at activation, as well as their version information, and submits the info to Apple, which checks to see if they're all up-to-date. If not, you get a prompt to update your software.

It would be fine if Apple released a widget that would allow users to voluntarily submit such information (that's basically what the system-wide Software Update program does), but making it automatic and seamless means most users don't know how to turn it off. It feels like the work of Microsoft.

However, the program can be disabled with a little work on the OS X Terminal.

Launch a window and enter:

sudo mv /etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisoryd.plist
/etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisoryd.plist.disabled

And then reboot. It's out of your hair. Not that it ever should have been there.

Cannot synch 60GB iPod 5th Gen with iPhotos library

Posted:Mar 19, 2006 11:32 AM by David Mackler

Okay, I seem to have sorted it out, at least for my case, without having to import the entire photo library to a new account or library.

I had an inspiration, and ran xmllint on the AlbumData.xml file in the iPhoto Library folder. It showed a few "unexpected end of file error" messages midway through the file. I inspected the file, and there were control-D characters in the names of some of my photos. Specifically, "Petrified Forest" had embedded control-D's for a bunch of the photos.

I changed the name to "Petrified Forest" using the batch change option, being very careful to type the name without any control characters. Bingo! iTunes saw the albums again and syncing went perfectly with my iPod Photo.

Clearly, there is a bug in iPhoto that even lets one embed control characters, and another in iTunes which chokes on those characters, even as the media browsers in other i-apps have no problem. Until Apple repairs iPhoto, here are the basic steps to resolve this problem. Note that I did a bunch of trial-and-error before I arrived at the root cause and repaired it, but I believe it should work.

Basic steps:

Make a safe copy of the AlbumData.xml file

Launch Terminal

"cd" to your iPhoto Library folder

Execute the following command: "xmllint AlbumData.xml"

If everything is okay, it will spit out a huge amount of output, basically the entire formatted output of the rather large AlbumData.xml file.

If there is a problem, it will spit out the line number and some content indicating the *first* error it found.

Use your favorite text editor (vi, TextWrangler, BBEdit, what-have-you) to examine that line. It should contain the name of an album, roll, or photo.

Using iPhoto, rename or batch rename the errant album, roll, or photos.

Verify in iTunes that you've solved it.HTH,David

Jon Udell is not happy about having to transcribe podcast URLs that iTunes displays, but does not allow to copy. While the general point about lock-in is good, here is a quick techie workaround in a meanwhile.

However much iTunes may want to hide the URLs, at some point it has to actually retrieve something from it, and do it using standard network protocol.

Enter Ethereal, open-source multi-platform network protocol analyser. Using it to get the URL is a serious overkill, but the tool itself comes useful over and over again in many situations.

The steps to snag the URL are:

With iTunes already open, start Ethereal up and run capture in non-promiscuous mode with 'tcp' as the filter.

Go to iTunes and do 'Update podcast' on the podcast you want.

Let the update happen and stop the Ethereal capture. You should now have a lot of packets in the Ethereal's view.

In the filter section (this is different filter from before) enter: http.request.uri contains "xml" .

This should show only the packets that are http requests for files with xml in their name. If nothing shows up, try http.request.method as filter. If there is still problem, try http and see if you have any traffic on the chosen interface at all.

Assuming you finally have the right request, you now do right-click-menu/Follow TCP Stream and copy the URI and host from there.

You are done. It sounds a bit long, but takes about 30 seconds after installation is done and correct interfaces are figured out.

For more advanced HTTP work, it is also worth going to the preferences for Ethereal and make sure that packet reassembly is enabled for all levels of the network stack (HTTP, TCP, IP).

NB.

It is, however, a mistake to equate "more secure" with "invulnerable." Keep in mind that the hacker who does break into your system has more skills than the average script kiddy. And when this happens, what should you be looking for? Let's assume that a malicious hacker wants one of two things:

To steal valuable data from your computer, such as credit card numbers or passwords.

Access to your system so that they can cover their tracks as they hack into other peoples computers.
